Congratulations to longstanding Company member Dafydd Weeks, who has just returned from his wedding/honeymoon to Hoi Pingu. Thankfully there were no holdups with the flights and Daf's returned to take up his rehearsals again for his role as Judge Turpin in Sweeney Todd.
Trivia: Dafydd is the first married member of the performing company in The Unknown Theatre Company's 14-year history!

So Spring Awakening came and went in a glory of praise and admiration (check out the show page), and now The Unknown Theatre Company is putting the finishing touches to one of its most ambitious seasons, getting all the details ready for Stephen Sondheim's Sweeney Todd in a couple of weeks.
With lots of new members in the YoYos group for our younger members, who meet elsewhere in he building at the same time as the main group are practicing, there's a lot of energy being used up on Tuesday evenings in Roath Church House at the moment!

Excellent performances all round (including our sterling techical team of Simon Carnell, Sam Jones and Jon Moore, and Stage Management support from Chris Moore), at the 2011 Glamorgan One-Act Play festival.
All four actors picked up acting nominations (an accomplishment no other company came near to achieving), and our director Lon David won the Directing trophy. A change in the rules this year meant we were no longer eligible to be considered for the youth trophy and, sadly, we didn't get chosen to progress to the Welsh final this year, but there was plenty for our casts/crews to feel immensely proud of.
Well done, all!

July 2010 |
On 26th June 2010, The Unknown Theatre Company represented Wales at the British Final Festival of One-Act Plays, following our recent success at the Wales Final Festival.
As was to be expected, the competition was fierce, but the Cotton Girls cast - Ellis Morgan, Kim Littlechild and Lorun Roberts - gave the performance of their lives, and brought the house down at the Village Theatre in East Kilbride, where the festival was being hosted by the Scottish Community Drama Association. Wales had every reason to be proud of the team - including technical/props supremos Martin Davies and Laizan Fung - but on the night, it was Ireland's turn to win, with an excellent production of Melody by
Deirdre Kinahan from Lurig Drama Group.
The festival was a joyous celebration of community drama, and unusual in the number of young performers it welcomed this year: both the Scottish and English casts were also almost all under 25, which is highly unusual for the British Final, where extensive experience usually counts for so much. But it meant that the energy and enthusiasm at the festival were also much higher than usual, and the whole event was enlivened and rejuvenated.
More details, and photos, to follow soon on a special British Festival page.

Two members of the Unknown YoYos were selected from applicants across the country to be the Wales contingent at the first ever World Children's Theatre Ensemble which was held in London in September 2010.
Children from countries across the world joined an ensemble to make a very special piece of theatre, incorporating acting, singing and dance. The project culminated in a public performance at the Albert Hall in London.
