The Oedipus Plays by Caroline Reader

A combination of the classic Greek plays Oedipus Rex , Oedipus at Colonus and Antigone , the play is in modern language which helps to make the powerful, tragic, timeless stories accessible to today's audiences. However, the modern language used is modified from our day-to-day vocabulary: easily learned and easily understood, but just that bit different.

Most people have heard about Oedipus, king of Thebes: about how - without realising who they were - he killed his father, married his mother and then, once he realised what he'd done, blinded himself. But the story goes on: Oedipus's sons then die fighting a war for control of Thebes; his uncle Creon takes over his throne; Oedipus's daughter nobly defies Creon's ban to bury her brother and is herself killed. And there's still more tragedy to come....

These are some of the greatest dramatic tragedies ever written, and the ending of the play is sad - to put it mildly! But there are some lovely comic touches in the play, so we need actors with comedy ability as much as we need those with the ability to play tragedy...

Here are the characters in the show:

All of these have some lines - some many lines - but all are important in driving forward the story. The Chorus plays a substantial part in the play and is key to the telling and the development of the story. Even if you have a named part, you will be required to be in the Chorus in those scenes where you are not in character. Depending on how many people are in the company, some of the Chorus part may be divided up to offer some individuals a significant individual presence in the play. There is some singing for the Chorus, but no-one will be required to sing at audition.

Rehearsals will be held on Tuesday evenings in Roath Church House. 8.00-10.00pm

You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown

This charming show is based on the famous Peanuts cartoon strip by Schulz, featuring some of the best-known characters. The many - short, some really short - scenes, revealing their characters and their relationships, consist of brief exchanges between the characters. Just like 3-box cartoons, really. For those familiar with the cartoon strip, there's much in the show that'll be recognisable: Snoopy's doghouse; Charlie Brown's kite; Sally Brown's psychiatry booth etc. There are 14 songs, many in multi-part harmony.

There are 6 named characters in this show: (for more info on the characters, see this Word document)

Charlie Brown
Sally Brown
- Charlie's sister
Lucy Van Pelt - Charlie's friend
Linus Van Pelt
- Lucy's little brother
Schroeder - Charlie's friend/pianist extraordinaire
Snoopy - Charlie's dog (see character descriptions/illustrations for more info)

All these characters are required to sing solos and hold strong harmony lines, so character performers will need to be confident and very experienced singers of high calibre, as well as very strong actors.

We are also looking for a team of 6 Shadows for the characters. These performers serve a number of essential functions within the show, including doubling for their counterparts in some songs; dancing with their counterparts; moving set etc.

The Shadows will need to attend all rehearsals and learn all the songs. This means that, if you are a Shadow, while you may not get to play one of the characters in the actual performance (though you might, if we need understudies), you will get to know the show thoroughly, and you would be able to use your knowledge of the songs in future Unknown songs-from-shows evenings, or other concert settings - or even possibly in another future production somewhere else.

Rehearsals will be held on Sunday evenings 6-9pm at Roath Church House.
